Dr. Hal Higdon
Dr. Hal Higdon has dedicated his career to expanding educational opportunity, strengthening workforce development, and serving the communities of southwest Missouri. As chancellor of the Ozarks Tech system and president of the Springfield campus, he has led the college through a period of significant growth, innovation, and regional impact since being hired by the Ozarks Tech Board of Trustees in 2006. Today, he is the longest-serving public college president in Missouri.
Under Dr. Higdon’s leadership, Ozarks Tech has expanded academic programs, strengthened community partnerships, and developed facilities that support workforce training and student success. One of the most transformational projects during his tenure was the construction of the Robert W. Plaster Center for Advanced Manufacturing, the largest building project in college history. His vision for workforce-focused education has helped position Ozarks Tech as a key driver of economic development and career preparation across the region.
Before joining Ozarks Tech, Dr. Higdon served in leadership roles at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and Faulkner State Community College, where he worked in administration, workforce training, and human resources. He also spent several years in private business, bringing both educational and industry perspectives to his leadership.
Beyond the college, Dr. Higdon has remained deeply engaged in community service and regional leadership. He has served on numerous boards and organizations focused on healthcare, workforce development, economic growth, and student success, reflecting his belief that strong communities are built through collaboration and education.
Impact
Dr. Hal Higdon’s impact on Ozarks Tech extends far beyond institutional leadership. Through personal philanthropy, he has established several scholarships that reflect his commitment to supporting students and honoring the people most important to him.
These scholarships include the Nancy Higdon Memorial Scholarship, established in memory of his late wife; the Lander James Johnston Memorial Scholarship, honoring his late grandson; and the Chancellor’s Scholarship, which supports student success at Ozarks Tech. Through these gifts, Dr. Higdon has helped create opportunities for students while turning personal loss and leadership into lasting support for future generations.
His dedication to student achievement, workforce education, and community advancement continues to shape the future of Ozarks Tech and the thousands of students the college serves each year.
