Dr. Shirley Lawler

Education and student success have long been at the center of Dr. Shirley Lawler’s life and career. Over more than four decades in education, she became known for her thoughtful leadership, dedication to academic excellence, and commitment to helping students discover opportunities that could change the course of their futures. Her work in both public schools and higher education left a lasting impact on countless students, educators, and communities throughout southwest Missouri.

In 1997, Dr. Lawler joined Ozarks Tech, where she served in several leadership roles before retiring in 2012 as Provost/Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs. Throughout her time at the college, she championed student-focused learning, academic quality, and access to education for students from all backgrounds.

Continuing her lifelong belief in the power of education, Dr. Lawler established the Samuel Pinkley Memorial Scholarship at Ozarks Tech in honor of her late grandson.

Samuel Pinkley was a bright, compassionate, and hardworking young man whose life left a lasting impact on those around him. Born in Joplin, Missouri, Samuel was known by teachers and classmates alike as an outstanding student with a kind heart and generous spirit. Educators praised both his academic dedication and his character, with one teacher expressing the wish for a classroom full of students like Samuel.

Beyond academics, Samuel enjoyed helping his family and neighbors, whether assisting with lawn work, delivering firewood, or helping with household tasks. His quiet kindness, strong work ethic, and willingness to serve others reflected the values that Dr. Lawler spent her own career encouraging in students and communities.
