Martha Ann “Marti” Speckman was a vibrant and creative individual whose life was defined by her love of learning, passion for storytelling, and deep devotion to her family. She passed away on March 12, 1998, in Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 49, leaving behind a legacy of curiosity, creativity, and connection.
Born on January 20, 1949, in Tooele, Utah, Marti was the daughter of William Chris Butler and Carol Jean Garat. Throughout her life, she lived in several communities, including Kansas City and the Lake of the Ozarks area, before making Springfield her home. Her professional path reflected her creative spirit, as she worked in media as a television producer in Columbia and Branson, where she helped bring stories to life.
Marti was a lifelong learner who believed deeply in personal growth and education. At the time of her passing, she was pursuing graduate studies at Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University), demonstrating her unwavering commitment to learning and self-improvement.
Above all, Marti treasured her family. She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Ray Speckman of Springfield; her children, Jennifer Speckman of Springfield and Jory Speckman of Harrison; her grandchildren, including Dillon Jory; and her stepchildren, Cynthia Speckman of Omaha and Guy Speckman of Savannah. She is also survived by her father, William Chris Butler; her brother, Mitchell Garat; and her sisters, Linda Page and Monique Garat-Foust of Salt Lake City, Utah. Marti was preceded in death by her mother, Carol Jean Garat; her stepfather, Jean L. Garat; and her brother, Jon P. Garat.
Marti’s life and legacy continue through her family, her creative work, and her enduring pursuit of knowledge. She was laid to rest in Silver Dollar City, Missouri, where her memory is honored and cherished.
